• Waste Management, combined with its wholly owned subsidiary Recycle America, is North America's largest recycler, managing 8 million tons of recyclables, saving natural resources and energy.

  • Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power about 1 million homes and save the equivalent of about more than 14 million barrels of oil per year (or 3.6 million tons of coal).

  • Waste Management's landfills provide more than 17,000 acres of protected habitat for wildlife, and 33 are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.

They may have already been recognized by Cal/OSHA with Star VPP status for being the safest refuse hauling district in California, but the drivers and staff at Coast Waste Management continue to make safety a top priority.

"The drivers and staff really take safety for themselves and the communities we serve seriously," said Stella Lopez, Safety and Compliance Manager for Coast Waste Management. "Even though they already achieved Star VPP certification, they still continue to raise the bar even higher with safety on the roads every day."

For the month of February, the drivers, technicians, staff and management at Coast Waste Management went accident and injury free. An accomplishment that isn’t easy to achieve when you consider the type of work these folks do every day.

"These drivers are lifting bins manually and driving massive trucks on tight streets," said Lopez. "Plus, our technicians and office staff work around equipment that can be dangerous if the proper safety measures aren’t taken."

As a reward and incentive to keep raising the bar for safety, the drivers and staff at Coast Waste Management were recently treated to a steak and eggs breakfast prepared by District Manager Ken Ryan and other management staff.

"It meant a lot to see Ken out there cooking breakfast for us," said Cristian Rivas, Coast Waste Management Residential Driver. "He showed us that our efforts to be safe don’t go unnoticed and that it really makes a difference for us and the city."

"Ken, Stella, Walter and other managers were on the grills cooking for us at 5 a.m.," said Balta Contreras Coast Waste Management Commercial Driver. "It was a nice treat and showed us that they really appreciate what we do everyday."

Coast Waste Management wasn’t the only North County district that recently achieved an accident and injury free month for February. In fact, Waste Management of North County, located in Oceanside, also achieved the same goal. The Oceanside district was treated to the same reward a week after Coast Waste Management and continues to work every day to keep themselves and the communities they serve safe.

"They all work so hard to stay safe and provide the very best service to our customers," Ryan said. "I’ll happily keep cooking them breakfast if it means they all stay safe and go home to their loved ones at night."
